Dear Sweet Friends,
Have you ever found yourself contemplating when the moment will arrive when you’ll attain that elusive “success” and live the life of your dreams? These inquiries tend to linger in our minds as we relentlessly pursue our aspirations, and I am no exception. Lately, however, a different question has taken center stage in my thoughts: am I mentally, emotionally, and physically equipped to embrace success when it comes knocking?
This question first emerged a few months ago and has since become a persistent presence in my consciousness. Over the past several months, its recurrence has prompted me to consider it more earnestly, almost as if the universe is signaling that it’s time to give this question the attention it deserves. Consequently, I’ve finally paused to delve into and answer this pivotal question: Am I prepared, in every sense—physically, emotionally, and mentally—for the life I’ve envisioned for so long?
I find myself currently immersed in what I like to call the “foundation-building” phase of my dreams, a season I often refer to as the “in-between.” As I navigate this journey, I constantly adapt and refine my vision, learning and growing along the way. Every day, I diligently make the most of the resources and tools available to me. I commit to showing up and taking even the smallest steps to transform my dreams and goals into reality.
Moreover, I strive to practice what I preach, emphasizing the significance of nurturing my emotional, mental, and physical well-being – a core belief at Sweet Lyfe Daily. We firmly believe that this forms the bedrock upon which one can build and sustain one’s life, regardless of the season they find themselves in.
Over the past months, I’ve dedicated considerable time and effort to working towards my desired life. During this period, I’ve encountered numerous challenges, faced setbacks, celebrated breakthroughs, and experienced incremental progress. Nevertheless, I remain resolute in my pursuit. I’ve established specific goals and milestones for my journey, and although I may not yet have seen the tangible “fruits of my labor,” I believe this question has arrived at the right moment. I’m eager to share how I unpacked and assessed it and how I’ve incorporated my findings into my daily routine.
The question of preparedness for success is relevant in every season of our life’s journey. Whether one is currently building and chasing one’s dreams or navigating a dry, desert-like phase, periodic reflection on this question can be invaluable.
In my recent life audit, I chose to address this question head-on. As I delved into assessing my emotional, mental, and physical well-being, I realized that there is room for improvement. This question has shifted my perspective on how I approach each day in preparation for my future self. While I’ve worked to prioritize my emotional, mental, and physical wellness, reframing it within the context of readiness for success has been a game changer.
Why is it important to prepare for success?
Life and its ups and downs will continue even after one achieves success or realizes one’s dreams. Success does not eliminate life’s inherent obstacles, challenges, or stressors; instead, it introduces new ones or magnifies old ones. These challenges may include ingrained habits, unresolved perspectives, or novel hurdles stemming from personal growth or newfound environments. Preparing ourselves to navigate life’s fluctuations fosters sustainability and resilience, irrespective of our current circumstances.
You can still thrive in the dry season of life. Here is how.
During these dry seasons, you may feel stagnant, your motivation may have waned, and progress is seemingly elusive. I believe that these times offer a golden opportunity to prepare yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally for the life you dream of. If your pursuits hit a rough patch, consider pivoting your focus towards introspection and cultivating healthy habits and routines that nurture your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
Much like pursuing your goals and dreams, working on your mental, emotional, and physical resilience is a gradual process. Identifying areas that require attention or even letting go of certain aspects of your life is an investment that pays dividends at any stage of your journey. In times of uncertainty, stagnation, or when grappling with emotions like fear, anxiety, and self-doubt, I believe taking action is a powerful way to address these challenges.
So, why not seize the opportunity to prepare emotionally, physically, and mentally for your upcoming success season during this dry spell? Ask yourself, “What is the next smallest step I can take to nurture my emotional, physical, and mental well-being in preparation for the life I dream of?
So, where do we start?
1. Self-Reflection
Yes, Sweet Friends, it’s time for some profound introspection. Conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your life, and take stock of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. How are you truly feeling? What areas can you work on to bolster your resilience? What tools can you implement for support? Be candid with yourself about every facet of your life—what’s satisfactory, what requires improvement, and what warrants removal or a thorough overhaul. This moment is opportune for such self-work; don’t postpone it until you’ve reached your destination. Begin by addressing each facet of your life, taking small steps, and progressively building upon them.
2. Cultivate a Gratitude Practice
I understand that emphasizing this point may sound repetitive. Still, I continue to advocate for it because it is an effective tool and practice. Engaging in gratitude and intentionally recognizing the positive aspects of our lives can shift our perspective. It enables us to acknowledge the presence of favorable circumstances and events.
One of my favorite quotes on gratitude, attributed to Roy T. Bennett, goes like this: “Be grateful for what you already have while you pursue your goals. If you aren’t grateful for what you already have, what makes you think you would be happy with more?” We’ve all encountered stories of individuals who have achieved their desires only to find themselves feeling unfulfilled. From my point of view, one contributing factor to this dissatisfaction is often a lack of gratitude and appreciation for what they possess and how far they’ve come.
Lately, I’ve been so focused and busy with my future plans I almost lost sight of the progress I’ve made. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of perpetually chasing the next big thing, constantly checking metrics, and seeking the next opportunity. However, the goals and intentions I set for myself over a year ago are slowly materializing, and the dreams I’ve longed for are becoming reality.
Each week, my sister and I have incorporated a vital question into our routine: “What have we accomplished?” This question serves as a reminder to celebrate our weekly wins by acknowledging our progress, which may vary from week to week. It infuses us with satisfaction, motivation, joy, and gratitude, knowing that we are steps closer to our goals and dreams.
3. Kickstart or Reaffirm Your Self-Care Commitment
Don’t wait until you are “successful” or achieve your dream life to start taking care of yourself; start doing it now. As I stated earlier, I refer to this phase in my life as the “in-between” – a period of constructing a solid foundation, where each small building block is put in place, occasionally adjusted, or fortified as I continue my journey. During this “in-between” phase, I’ve chosen to concentrate on self-care, dedicating time to introspection to discern what I need to be and feel my best.
In this season, I am establishing habits and routines that cater to these needs, ones that will provide support for my future self. Note that this commitment is pertinent in all seasons. Developing habits and routines that nurture our emotional, mental, and physical well-being, regardless of the season, fosters sustainability.
Here are some questions to ponder: Do you require rest? Identify the type of rest that rejuvenates you. Are you a workaholic who fails to schedule “white space” in your calendar for leisure, hobbies or to just wander? Have you kept up with your physical well-being, including your annual medical check-ups? Is there room for improvement to lead a healthier life? And what about your mental health? Are there areas that need attention to help build resilience for the forthcoming season of success? These questions serve as a starting point to ensure that you are physically, emotionally, and mentally prepared for your season of triumph and prosperity.
4. Connect or Reconnect with Your Inner Circle
Establishing and nurturing a supportive inner circle is another important step in preparing for your upcoming season of success. Cultivating a social support system is key when you are working on your physical, emotional, and mental readiness for success. This network of individuals may include trusted friends, family, and peers, who are there to provide both emotional and practical support. If you already have such a supportive network, ensure you are nurturing these relationships. However, if you need to find such a social network, take the initiative to seek out people with whom you naturally connect. 5. Financial Wellness
Financial Wellness is an area that is not emphasized enough in the wellness space. Achieving the right mindset regarding money is a critical component of everyone’s journey. Yet, it often receives insufficient consideration in discussions about wellness. Developing an awareness of what money signifies to you emotionally and uncovering your unconscious beliefs about money is another essential step in preparing for your season of success.
The phrase “More Money, More Problems,” popularized by Notorious B.I.G. (also known as “Biggie”) in his hit song of the same name, offers a thought-provoking perspective. In the song, Biggie conveys that fame and money, which many might equate with success, come with their own set of challenges. While having money can facilitate an opulent lifestyle and resolve immediate problems, it also entails trade-offs, which Biggie termed “problems.” So, how does this song tie into readiness for success? For me, it prompted the question: What does money truly mean to me?
In the book ” Psychology of Money,” Morgan Hounsel wrote, “the greatest dividend money yields is the capacity to do as you wish, when you wish, with whomever you wish, for as long as you wish.” This resonated with me and sums up what money means to me. Defining what money represents to you, how you engage with it, and identifying any unconscious beliefs you may hold about money are vital steps in preparing for success. As mentioned earlier, we’ve all heard stories of individuals who seemingly have it all, including wealth, yet remain unfulfilled. Devoting time to cultivate healthy habits and emotions around money is another pivotal step in readiness for your season of success.
6. Take Intentional Steps Toward Crafting the Life You Truly Desire
Revisiting my “Why” has proven to be a reliable anchor in steering me toward the pursuit of my dream life. I’ve discovered that Intentional Living is a lifestyle that serves as a compass, allowing me to continually re-examine my “Why” and helping me maintain clarity about the vision and actions necessary to realize my dreams.
Being intentional about how we navigate each day heightens our awareness of our emotional, physical, and mental needs, fostering a healthier and more sustainable life both now and in the future. It’s a lifestyle I’ve chosen at this stage of my life, one that not only makes me attuned to my own needs but also to those of my community and the environment. This lifestyle sustains me and aligns with my core values.
So, my Sweet Friends, I encourage you to reflect on what kind of lifestyle will sustain you emotionally, mentally, and physically and begin integrating elements of that lifestyle into each season of your journey. Remain adaptable, flexible, and open-minded, as you may discover that your idea of success may evolve and change as you move forward in your journey.
Last Sweet Words
Taking proactive measures to prepare yourself emotionally, physically, and mentally for the impending season of success is essential. Remember that even during moments of apparent inactivity, you are, in fact, accomplishing something invaluable. You are bestowing upon yourself rest, self-compassion, and tranquility.
Cultivating presence, heightened awareness, genuine appreciation, and reflective introspection throughout your journey can equip us for what lies ahead. Attend to these vital aspects of your life so that when success comes knocking, you are fully prepared to manage them with grace, wholeheartedly appreciate them, and bask in the joy and contentment they bring.
Keep Dreaming!
